The #SMCEDU project seeks to ensure that graduates from every college/university are media literate and are able to competently understand and apply the emerging lessons from social media in organizations. It has always been the goal of Social Media Club to create what I think of as a "path to professionalism" for citizen journalists, story tellers, video producers, communications professionals and engineers.

We will support existing social media education efforts such as PR Open Mic, Classroom 2.0, Social Media Classroom and others while also seeking to coordinate efforts with school administrators and local professionals.  Key to our success will be connecting the local Social Media Club groups more closely with their local universities to co-create a combination of mentoring programs, internships, professional development opportunities and a repository of Creative Commons licensed Social Media curriculum. As such, we are seeking local Social Media Club chapters with existing professors and ties to local schools to join our efforts to create some pilot programs.

Charter

Article I: Name

This organization shall be named the "Social Media Club Education Connection at Georgetown University" or SMCEDU-GU in abbreviated form.

Article II: Management Authorization and Key Stakeholders

SMCEDU-GU shall be administered by "Hilltop Consultants of Georgetown University" (see hilltopconsultants.org) under the direction of Renee Goldman (President), Nicholas Rakowski (Director of Consulting Operations) and Lin Yang (Director of Business Development).  The inclusion of SMCEDU-GU under Hilltop Consultants allows this budding organization to avoid the lengthy and highly restrictive probation period required of new clubs at Georgetown University. After a pilot period (most likely one year), the administrators of the club may choose to create a new board position, within Hilltop Consultants, to administer the club; also, they may choose to divest Hilltop Consultants of SMCEDU-GU and spin it off as a new, independent organization.

After the pilot period, Hilltop Consultants will decide how to continue with SMCEDU-GU through a vote by the board of directors.  If Hilltop Consultants decides to continue as-is, the most senior members of the Hilltop Consultants board of directors will administer SMCEDU-GU.

The primary stakeholders of SMCEDU-GU will be the general membership of Hilltop Consultants (over 400 members) as well as the Georgetown University community at large, as all events will be made public to further the cause of social media literacy and education.

Article III: Goals and Priorities

The primary goal of SMCEDU-GU will be to educate the members of the Georgetown University community about the emerging importance of social media in for-profit, non-profit, government and personal applications.  This new organization will do so through lectures, mentoring programs, networking sessions as well as other manners of professional development.

The priorities of the organization, in descending order of importance, are as follows:

  1. Professional development seminars/lectures with industry leaders
  2. Allowing members to personally interact with professionals in the social media field
  3. The establishment of a mentoring program or procedure

Article IV: Scope

SMCEDU-GU will act as a educational forum for those interested in the field of social media.  It will also allow members to connect with professionals; however, this organization does not intend to act primarily as a grounds for recruiting.  Though members may gain professional contacts through involvement with SMCEDU-GU, there is no obligation for contacts to aid members in their careers.

Article V: Fees and Finances

There will be no fee to participate in SMCEDU-GU for Hilltop Consultants members or members of the Georgetown University community.  Hilltop Consultants will provide funding if necessary; however, there should be no major expenditures this year.  The Vice President of Finance of Hilltop Consultants, Robert Benkert, will control the dispersement of funds under the governance of the board of directors of Hilltop Consultants.

Article VI: Success Criteria

The pilot program will be considered a success if SMCEDU-GU succesfully holds X events over the course of the first semester, X events the second semester OR Y events overall(?).

Article VII: Schedule and Meetings

The board of Hilltop Consultants will administer the club during its weekly meetings on MONDAY NIGHTS (?).

The schedule is as follows:
