The press release: it's often called PR's "necessary evil." Journalists have a love/hate relationship with it, but PR people have been using it for more than 100 years now. Just how necessary is the press release, and how evil is it? Social media pundits have devised an alternative to the press release: the "social media release." Join some of the creators and thought leaders behind the social media release for a discussion on the past, present and future of the social media release and public relations in general. Special thanks to our friends at IDG and NetworkWorld for hosting January's event!

Agenda

6:00pm - Reception (Light Food and Drinks)

Meet your fellow hobbyists, students and practitioners of social media.

6:30pm - Welcome, Introductions and Goals for This Meeting

Please feel free to jump in and share who you are, who you're with, why you're here and what you hope to get out of the SMC. Todd Van Hoosear of Topaz Partners and Howard Sholkin of IDG will start things off.

6:45pm - Social Media Club Update

What's new with the Social Media Club? Howard Greenstein, one of our co-founders, will give us an update on club activities from a national perspective.

7:00pm - The Social Media Release

Todd Defren, who created the first social media release template, will kick off a discussion about the past, present and future of the social media release, and its implications for PR and media professionals. After a short background and intro on the subject, we're looking for folks to stand up and share their initial thoughts about this.

7:30pm - Social Media Release Breakout Sessions

Like the last time, we'll run two rounds of these.

8:15pm - Breakout Session De-Briefs and Next Steps

Finally, we'll get together again as a group to review our learnings and plan the next few meetings of the club.

We're looking for volunteers to help coordinate future events, sponsors and hosts for future meetings, and suggestions for future topics. Please be sure to share your thoughts on Thursday, and visit socialmediaboston.org to give us your input. Thanks!

Thanks to our Sponsoring Hosts IDG and NetworkWorld for making this event possible!

Directions

Take the Mass Pike (I-90) East Bound to Exit 12 (Rte. 9 Framingham/Southborough). Go through the tollbooth and bear left onto Rte. 9 West Bound. Follow Rte. 9 West Bound for approximately 2.5 miles. After you go through your second set of traffic lights on Rte. 9, you will see a body of water on your right hand side. At this point, you should be in the left-hand lane of traffic. At your next set of traffic lights, make a U-turn and head back up Rte. 9 (eastbound). The building will be the third set of office buildings on your right-hand (eastbound) side after you make the U-turn (in The Southborough Office Park). The address is 118 Turnpike Road and NetworkWorld is located on the second floor (there is a very visible sign on the building).
