Inaugural Boston Meeting

Thursday, November 2, 2006

Colonnade Hotel, Boston Ballroom

6:00pm - 8:30pm

Can social media tools change the way marketers, consumers, organizations and journalists interact? What practices can individuals, institutions and corporations put in place now to better communicate ideas, benefits, opinions and needs?

Please join your Boston-based peers from PR agencies, marketing groups, academia, mainstream journalists and bloggers/podcasters in this new effort to further the science and art of social media:

Agenda

6:00pm - Reception (Drinks and Hors D'Oeuvres)

Meet your fellow students, hobbyists and practitioners of social media.

6:30pm - Welcome, Introductions and Goals for This Meeting (Todd Van Hoosear, Topaz Partners)

Please feel free to jump in and share who you are, who you're with, why you're here and what you hope to get out of the SMC.

6:45pm - About the Social Media Club (Chris Heuer, SMC Co-Founder)

Chris will share his vision for the club, and bring you up to speed on happenings to-date, including other events and progress toward a new media press release standard.

7:15pm - Update from the Day's Events (Jen McClure, SNCR President)

Jen will share the top-level findings and insights from the SNCR Research Symposium, taking place earlier in the day.

7:25pm - Short Presentations from the Field

To get the discussion flowing, we've asked a few folks to stand up and share, in 2-3 minutes, what they're doing and seeing in the social media world. We've left time for a Q&A at the end.

  • PodCamp Co-Founder Chris Brogan will talk about content networks and citizen-embedded journalism (Chris has had to cancel)
  • Author and consultant David M. Scott will talk about his upcoming book on "The New Rules of Marketing & PR"
  • ProxPro Founder Julian Bourne will discuss the intersection of mobile technology, networking and social media
  • Podcast.com's Duncan Perry will share his thoughts on the future of podcasting
  • Blogger Brian Balfour of ZoomInfo will discuss integrating social media into your product offerings

Because of time constraints and the potentially huge turnout at this event, we need to keep this section as brief as possible--therefore we're not accepting any additional short speakers, but that doesn't mean you can't ask questions of these presenters. If you'd like to speak at a future event, please email Todd Van Hoosear at tvanhoosear@topazpartners.com or suggest a topic on the BostonEvents wiki page (email Todd for the wiki password).

7:45pm - Breakout Sessions

After these presentations and discussion, we'll judge folks' interest and break up into discussion groups based on the following interest areas:

  • Social Media 101 (for anyone looking to get educated on the subject) - Chris Heuer (suggested)
  • The Future of Journalism (for media: new, old and consumer-generated) - Howard Sholkin, IDG
  • Do PR Agencies Understand Social Media? (is it too early to talk best practices?) - Tony Sapienza
  • The Search for the Perfect Press Release (social media press release standards) - Todd Van Hoosear
  • Getting a (Second) Life (have you opened your office in Second Life yet?) - Bryan Person
  • Disclosure, Public Companies and Blogs (good corporate communications topic) - Isabel Walcott Hilborn

If you'd like to volunteer to facilitate any of these, edit this page and add your name after the dash! If you'd like to suggest a new break-out session topic, add one (email tvanhoosear@topazpartners.com for the wiki password)!

8:15pm - Next Steps

Finally, we'll get together again as a group to plan the next few meetings of the club.

We're looking for volunteers to help coordinate future events, sponsors and hosts for future meetings, and suggestions for future topics. Please be sure to share your thoughts on Thursday, and visit the BostonEvents page to give us your input. Thanks!

Thanks to our Sponsoring Host the Society for New Communications Research, who made the room available as part of their excellent program, and to our other Sponsor Topaz Partners, which is supporting both the SNCR event and this evening's Social Media Club event.
